What
Is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)?
The most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest
(SCA) is an electrical malfunction of the heart
called ventricular fibrillation (VF). (VF)
causes the heart muscle to quiver that makes it
unable to pump blood to the heart, brain and other
organs of the body. Brain death and permanent death
start to occur in just 4-6 minutes after someone
experiences (SCA).

What is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR)?
When (SCA) occurs the heart stops pumping blood
and the victim stops breathing. Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) is a combination of rescue
breathing and chest compressions delivered to
the victim thought to be in (SCA). (CPR) can
support a small amount of blood flow to the heart
and brain to buy time until an (AED) or more
definitive care can be used. The victim’s
chances of survival are reduced 7-10 % with every
minute that passes without defibrillation. (CPR)
can aid to give the victim more time. |
What
is an Automatic External Difibrillator (AED)?
An automatic external difibrillator (AED) is a small portable electronic device
that can be used by trained non-professionals as well as Emergency Medical professionals
that analyzes the heart’s rhythm and tells the user to deliver a defibrillation
shock only if needed. An (AED) will give voice promps and screen displays to
aid the user in how gto attach the external electrodes, when to do cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR), when to stand clear while the (AED) is analyzing, and when
to deliver an electrical shock to the victim only if needed. |
