EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – Basic, Initial

Course Description
This EMT-B course meets or exceeds the United States DOT Curriculum and the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board. The EMT-B is one of the most utilized pre hospital care givers in the Emergency Medical Services System. The goal is to provide the students with the core knowledge, skills and attitudes to function in the capacity of an EMT-B in the State of Minnesota. Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be certified as an EMT-B by the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board. Also will take the National Registration for EMT-B.

Prerequisite
Must have current immunization records.
Must be 18 years or older by the completion of this course.
Proof of health insurance.
Must have Healthcare Providers CPR certification.

Course Goals and Objectives

  • Obtain a base knowledge of the human anatomy and physiology.
  • Show knowledge in the roles, responsibilities and ethics of a EMT-B
  • Become proficient with all skills associated with the EMT-B.
  • Obtain critical thinking skills in patient assessment and treatment.
  • Recognize hazards associated in the EMT-B role
  • Practice and prepare for the National Registry.

Course Activities
Class will be split between lecture and hands on skills. Students will be working with other students practicing all skills associated with being an EMT-B along with patient assessment. Each student will be doing one 8-hour ride along with a mentor from Mdewakanton Emergency Services ambulance and a 5-hour clinical at St Francis ER in which a mentor will be provided.

Attendance / Grading
Attendance is mandatory to complete the required hours for this course. Quizzes will be given periodically after the completion of various modules and skills. There will be a mid-course written and skills exam covering all material covered prior to and a final written and skills exam covering all material covered in this course. Notification of the National Registry written and skills exam will be by mid course. All students must complete the course with no less than 80% on written, and pass the skills test to be able to move on to the Registry test to obtain both the national and State certification. Grading will be the accumulation of all the quizzes, and tests combined. Points will be awarded for class participation, skill checks, and extra credit given out in class.

A = 91 – 100%
B = 90 – 81%
C = 80 – 71%
D = 70 – 61%

Students will be allowed to re-take the final skills, three attempts will be allowed. Only a maximum of two skill stations may be re-tested during the day of exam. In failure to meet the grade percentage minimum the student will meet with the instructors, course coordinator, EMS Department Director, and Medical Director to discuss a course of action to meet the requirements.

Texts/ Uniforms
Each student will be provided with the Brady edition of EMT-B and workbook at the beginning of the first class. All additional study guides, books and materials will be the responsibility of the student. During the ride alongs and clinical, each student will be required to wear:

  • White button down shirt (Long or short sleeve) or white polo shirt with NO logo’s.
  • Black or navy blue pants. NO JEANS.
  • Black shoes or EMS boots. NO TENNIS SHOES.
  • Black dress or work socks must be worn if wearing shoes.
  • Name tag will be provided for clinical.

Clinical/ Ride-along
Students will be provided a mentor to follow throughout their shift. Students may be asked to take vitals and or help with the care of a patient. Students are not allowed to discuss the treatment, diagnosis, name or anything relating to the patient to that given incident to anyone except their mentor. Any student found breaking this rule will be expelled from this course with no refund, and if any legal action is taken from this the student will be solely responsible.

Fees
A fee of $695.00 + 75.00 (books) for this EMT-B course is due, no later than the first day of class. The course book and work book is included.
