EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – Basic, Refresher

Course Description
This course will refresh the student to the most current EMT-B standards in the State of Minnesota and provide an update on revised emergency care skills and techniques for re-certification as an EMT-B in the State of Minnesota. All course material is based off the guidelines set forth by the United States DOT Curriculum and the State Regulatory Board. Successful completion of this course will result in a two-year renewable certification as an EMT-B in the State of Minnesota.

Prerequisite
Must provide current Minnesota EMT-B certification card with number and expiration date.
Must provide current Healthcare Provider CPR card.

Course Goals and Objectives

  • Refresh critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • improve self-confidence in scene management and basic EMT-B skills
  • Demonstrate and improve proficiency in patient assessment and treatments
  • Demonstrate all required skills under the United States DOT Curriculum for exam.

Course Activities
Class will be split between lecture and hands on skills. Students will be working with other students practicing all skills associated with being an EMT-B along with patient assessment.

Attendance / Grading
Attendance is mandatory to complete the required hours for this course. Quizzes will be given periodically after the completion of various modules and skills. There will be a skills exam covering all material covered in this course. All students must complete the course with no less than 80% on written, and pass the skills test to obtain State certification. Grading will be the accumulation of all the quizzes, and tests combined. Points will be awarded for class participation, skill checks, and extra credit given out in class.

A = 91 – 100%
B = 90 – 81%
C = 80 – 71%
D = 70 – 61%

Students will be allowed to re-take the final skills, three attempts will be allowed. Only a maximum of two skill stations may be re-tested during the day of exam. In failure to meet the grade percentage minimum the student will meet with the instructors, course coordinator, EMS Department Director, and Medical Director to discuss a course of action to meet the requirements.

Registration
Students must be registered by the start of the first class. $275 fee for the course must be received before the start of the first class.

Text
Brady EMT-B edition and workbook are optional for this class and may be purchased prior to or at the beginning of the first class. All students wanting books must notify the education department prior to class.
