Course Description
This First Responder course meets or exceeds the United States DOT Curriculum and the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board. The goal is to provide the students with the core knowledge, skills and attitudes to function in the capacity of an First Responder in the State of Minnesota. Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be certified as a First Responder by the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board.

Prerequisite
Must have current immunization records. Must be 18 years or older by the completion of this course. Proof of health insurance.

Course Goals and Objectives

  • Obtain a base knowledge of the human anatomy and physiology.
  • Show knowledge in the roles, responsibilities and ethics of a First Responder
  • Become proficient with all skills associated with the First Responder
  • Obtain critical thinking skills in patient assessment and treatment.
  • Recognize hazards associated in the First Responder role
  • Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description

Course Activities
Class will be split between lecture and hands on skills. Students will be working with other students practicing all skills associated with being an First Responder along with patient assessment.

Attendance / Grading
Attendance is mandatory to complete the required hours for this course. Quizzes will be given periodically after the completion of various modules and skills. There will be a mid-course written and skills exam covering all material covered prior to and a final written and skills exam covering all material covered in this course. All students must complete the course with no less than 80% on written, and pass the skills test to obtain State certification. Grading will be the accumulation of all the quizzes, and tests combined. Points will be awarded for class participation, skill checks, and extra credit given out in class.

A = 91 – 100%
B = 90 – 81%
C = 80 – 71%
D = 70 – 61%

Students will be allowed to re-take the final skills, three attempts will be allowed. Only a maximum of two skill stations may be re-tested during the day of exam. In failure to meet the grade percentage minimum the student will meet with the instructors, course coordinator, EMS Department Director, and Medical Director to discuss a course of action to meet the requirements.

Fees
A fee of $440 (book including) for this First Responder Initial course is due, no later than the first day of class. The course book and work book is included.
