Hiring Requirements
Firefighter / Paramedic Interview Process
In order to become a firefighter at Mdewakanton Emergency Services, you need to meet the following qualification:
- EMT-Paramedic
There is an initial pre-interview screening process completed by HR. If qualified, an appointment will be setup for an oral interview at the Mdewakanton Emergency Services station with at least two Mdewakanton Fire Captains and Employment Recruiter.
If selected, there will be practical skills and agility testing.
PRACTICAL SKILLS

Candidate will complete three live scenarios.
- Cardiac Incident
- Trauma Incident
- Medical Emergency

Fire Testing
- Candidate will complete a 100 question test as Firefighter 1.

EMS Testing
- Candidate will complete a 100 questioni NREMT-B or P level test.

Hazmat Ops Skills Test
- Candidate will complete a 100 question Hazmat Operations level test.
PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST
The test consists of two timed sections. Each candidate will be required to wear specific gear and while wearing complete the following:
1st Timed Section
- Pull a charged 1 3/4 hose line 50 ft. then discharge a full stream for 5 seconds at 100 psi.
- Remove a K12 saw and portable jaws together from an apparatus, carry them for 75 ft. then return them to their previous location on the apparatus.
- Using a Kaiser Sled (or wooden beam as replacement if needed) move bean 6 ft. using a hand maul.
- Walk roof ladder in hand over hand fashion from ground to lean on building. Do not extend ladder.
- On a secured ladder, climb up and over onto roof, grab rope and raise donut roll onto room and set it down. Pick roll back up and lower to ground in a controlled manner.
- Drag or carry fireman dummy length of bay floor.
2nd Timed Section
- While wearing required gear, employee will carry a 150 ft. 1 3/4 high-rise bundle up to the 10th floor and then return to the starting point. Each step must be touched on the way up and down. The hand rail must be used at all times and the test must be done in a safe manner.
- Passing time for stairs: first step up to the last step off is 4-8 minutes.
A physical assessment will be completed on each candidate prior to the 2nd timed section and 5 minutes after the completion of the 2nd timed section. This will consist of:
- 4 lead heart monitoring
- Blood Pressure
- Heart Rate
Scoring will be done on a grading curve with no failings given due to time on a scale of 1 to 10. All sections must be completed by each candidate. If candidate is unable to complete any of the above sections, the testing process will be stopped and the candidate will not qualify to move on in the hiring process.
