Emergency Medical Responder – Refresher

Course Description:
The Emergency Medical Responder course meets or exceeds the United States DOT Curriculum and the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board. All instructors hold certification from the Minnesota EMS regulatory board of EMT-Basic or EMT-Paramedic and have at minimum 3 years of experience on an ALS Transporting Ambulance. All Lead Instructors have completed a DOT instructor course. The Emergency Medical Responder is an integral part of the Emergency Medical Services System. The goal is to refresh the student’s core knowledge, skills, and attitudes to function in the capacity of an Emergency Medical Responder, along with information on any new advances in the EMS field related to the role of the Emergency Medical Responder. Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be re-certified as an Emergency Medical Responder by the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board.

Prerequisite:

  • First Responder/Emergency Medical Responder Certificate, either current or within 12 months of expiration

Course Goals and Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an base knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
  • Show knowledge in the roles, responsibilities and ethics of an Emergency Medical Responder
  • Show proficient with all skills associated with the Emergency Medical Responder
  • Refresh critical thinking skills in patient assessment
  • Recognize hazards associated in the Emergency Medical Responder role

Course Activities:
Class will be split between lecture and hands-on skills. Students will be working with other students, practicing all skills associated with the Emergency Medical Responder, including patient assessment. Each student will have the option of doing ride-alongs with Mdewakanton Public Safety Ambulance.

Attendance/Grading:
Attendance is mandatory to complete the required hours for this course. Quizzes may be given periodically. Students are required to pass the skills exam to meet the Emergency Medical Responder Curriculum. Grading will be the accumulation of any quizzes, and skills checks combined.

All students are required to have no less than a score of 80% to complete the course and be eligible to apply for a renewed certification. Students will be allowed to re-take the final skills; three attempts will be allowed. In the failure to meet the grade percentage minimum, the student will meet with the instructors, course coordinator, EMS department head and Medical Director to discuss a course of action to meet the requirements.

Text/Uniforms:
A textbook is not required for this course; however the curriculum is taken from the AAOS Emergency Medical Responder fifth edition. Any additional study guides, books and material will be the responsibility of the students.

Ride-Along (optional):
Students will be provided with a mentor to follow throughout their shift. Students may be asked to take vitals and/or help with the care of a patient. Students are not allowed to discuss the treatment, diagnosis, name or anything relating to the patient or given incident to anyone except their mentor. Any student found breaking this rule will be expelled from this course with no refund.

During optional ambulance ride-alongs, each student in required to wear:

  • White button down shirt (long or short sleeve) or white polo shirt with NO LOGO’S
  • Black or navy blue pants (NO JEANS)
  • Black shoes or EMS boots (NO TENNIS SHOES)
  • Black dress or work socks must be worn if wearing shoes
  • Name tag will be provided for clinical

Fees:
A fee of $200.00 for this Emergency Medical Responder course is due no later than the first day of class.

Student Complaints:
All Student Complaints should be reported to the Course Coordinator for investigation and resolution.
