June is National Safety Month, but it is important to practice fire safety all summer long. Whether you are enjoying a fire, grilling out, or lighting off fireworks, follow these tips for a safe and fun summer.
BE VIGILANT DURING BONFIRES
*Keep all outdoor fires a safe distance away from all flammable structures (including above your fire) and be aware of any relevant weather conditions.
*Be prepared in case of emergency. Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby in case your fire spreads. Dirt or sand can also be used in the absence of water.
*Keep yourself and others safe. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Keep an eye on children and pets and make sure everyone knows safety precautions and procedures.
*Put your fire out safely. Make sure to extinguish your fire when you are done enjoying it. Never leave the site until you know the fire is fully out.
BE CAREFUL AT BARBECUES
*No matter what style of outdoor cooking you do this summer, make sure your equipment is in proper working order at all times. Keep items clean throughout the season, including removing grease buildup.
*Keep your cooking equipment well away from homes, deck railings, and overhead obstructions like tree branches and eaves.
*Keep children and pets at least three feet away from cooking areas and never leave cooking equipment unattended when in use.
BE SAFE WITH FIREWORKS
*Designate a safe perimeter to keep everyone safe and only light one firework at a time.
*Don’t hold fireworks in your hands and never throw or point fireworks at another person.
*Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. Keep a water supply nearby in case of emergency and soak spent fireworks in water before discarding.
*Sparklers may appear to be a safe alternative to things that go boom, but they are not. The NSC says sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees—enough to melt metal. For children under five, sparklers account for half of all fireworks injuries. Keep them away from kids and use glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers.
*Best advice: Kick back and enjoy while the experts handle the fireworks.
