Have a Safe and Happy Fourth of July

Mdewakanton Public Safety (MPS) wishes all a happy Fourth of July and encourages everyone to celebrate safely this holiday weekend.

Firework Safety Tips

*Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them and be considerate of others (including children and pets) if you choose to use them.

*Designate a safe perimeter to keep everyone safe and only light one firework at a time.

*Don’t hold fireworks in your hands and never throw or point fireworks at another person.

*Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. Keep a water supply nearby in case of emergency and soak spent fireworks in water before discarding.

*Sparklers may appear to be a safe alternative to things that go boom, but they are not. The NSC says sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees—enough to melt metal. For children under five, sparklers account for half of all fireworks injuries. Keep them away from kids and use glow sticks, confetti poppers, or colored streamers.

*Best advice: Kick back and enjoy while the experts handle the fireworks.
